From the description of your M1840, the flaking on my sword is more on the minor side. Your comparison is helpful. I don't have frizzy spots on the grip leather, it's all smooth. I just have lighter, slightly reddish leather showing in small areas where the darker, glossy finish has rubbed away. Again, I really appreciate the advice.
