GR-0625-6523, Factory Engraved Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon .31 percussion cal. 5 shot. The gun shows a dark chocolate patina, showing honest wear and scattered bumps and dings. The grips are original in very good condition. There are traces of original varnish and the toes on front of each grip have shipped off. I see this often on baby dragoons and early pockets. The chips are old, worn smooth and dark wood. Serial number 78XX matches on the barrel, frame, trigger-guard, back-strap and cylinder. The wedge and wedge screw have been replaced. The gun was made in 1848. There are only traces of the cylinder scene on the cylinder but “Colts Patent” and the cylinder are both faint but visible and legible. The mechanics are crisp and functional. The cylinder rotates and indexes correctly. A couple of screws look replaced. The barrel address is crisp and clear. The bore is mostly bright, the rifling is crisp with patches of residue. The bore needs cleaning, it is very good as is and will clean better. The quality of the engraving is excellent, typical of early Colt revolvers. It shows wear like the rest of the gun. Finding an engraved baby dragoon in any condition is very difficult and is a desirable gun. This is a nice example, it is a gun that shows evidence of hard use over many years. It was never a pocket princess revolver.

The Colt Model 1848 “Baby Dragoon” came about as Colt’s answer to a growing need for a smaller, more portable revolver in the mid-1800s. It was essentially a scaled-down version of the big .44 caliber Dragoon pistols used by mounted troops, but this one was chambered in .31 caliber and designed with everyday carry in mind—perfect for lawmen, travelers, and folks heading west.

Samuel Colt introduced the Baby Dragoon shortly after reestablishing his firearms business in Hartford, Connecticut, around 1847–48. Unlike earlier revolvers, this one had no loading lever at first and featured a square-back trigger guard, giving it a distinctive look. It was lightweight, reliable, and one of the first true pocket-sized revolvers available on the American market.

Its historical significance lies in the timing. The Baby Dragoon arrived just as the country was expanding westward. It became a popular sidearm during the California Gold Rush and helped establish Colt’s dominance in the personal firearms market. It also laid the groundwork for the more refined 1849 Pocket model, which became Colt’s best-selling percussion revolver.

In short, the Baby Dragoon helped Colt transition from military contracts to the booming civilian market—and gave Americans a dependable tool for self-defense in a rapidly changing country.
