The Colt Model 1877 Lightning was Colt’s first attempt at a double-action revolver, introduced in 1877. It came at a time when Colt was looking to stay competitive as firearm technology advanced. While the Single Action Army was already a hit with soldiers and cowboys alike, the Lightning offered something new: a smaller-framed, faster-firing revolver that you didn’t have to manually cock before every shot.

The Lightning was chambered in .38 Long Colt, while the Thunderer was chambered in .41. These revolvers were sleek, concealable, and double-action, meaning a shooter could fire simply by pulling the trigger—making them a popular sidearm for those who needed speed over brute power.

The Lightning gained popularity with lawmen, gamblers, and outlaws in the late 19th century, especially as an everyday-carry pistol. It was lighter and easier to conceal than the larger Army models, and while the double-action mechanism was delicate and often criticized for being prone to wear, it was still a favorite among those who liked the faster trigger pull.

Historically, the Colt Lightning saw use in both civilian defense and law enforcement circles. One of the most famous figures associated with the gun was Billy the Kid, who was known to have carried a Lightning, along with other Colts. John Wesley Hardin, the deadly Texas gunman and gambler, is also said to have favored a Colt double-action revolver during his later years.

Though it wasn’t as mechanically rugged as the Single Action Army, the Colt 1877 Lightning still holds its place as a significant step in revolver development. It bridged the gap between the old thumb-cocked designs and the more modern double-actions that would come to define the 20th century.
