$1,450.00

GR-0725-6632, Metropolitan Navy. .36 percussion cal, 6 shot. A patent infringement of the Colt Model 1851 Navy. Serial number 5XXX matches on the barrel, lever, frame, trigger-guard, back-strap and cylinder. The wedge number does not match. The grips retain about 60% original varnish with moderate bumps, dings and light scratches. Just honest use marks. Grips were never sanded or cleaned. The cylinder retains about 75% scene. The action is crisp and tight with 4 clicks. The barrel address is clear and legible. The bore is bright, shiny and crisply rifled. Fine condition bore. The gun is mostly mottled gray with scattered spots of staining. Very good overall.

The Metropolitan Navy Revolver: A Colt by Another Name

The Metropolitan Navy revolver was born out of opportunity—and imitation. Manufactured between 1864 and 1866 by the Metropolitan Arms Company of New York City, this six-shot, .36 caliber percussion revolver was, for all intents and purposes, a near-exact copy of the Colt 1851 Navy.

The roots of this imitation trace back to the heart of the Civil War. In 1861, Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company temporarily ceased production due to a massive fire at its Hartford factory and the death of its founder, Samuel Colt. While the company reorganized and resumed production, this disruption opened a window for competitors.

Metropolitan Arms was one of several firms that jumped in to fill the void in military and civilian demand for revolvers. Its revolvers were built using tooling and machinery that some believe came directly from Colt’s own factory—sold off during the transition after Samuel Colt’s death. Whether those tools were acquired officially or not, the end result was a revolver so similar to the Colt Navy that many parts were interchangeable.

Despite the blatant copying, Colt never took serious legal action. There are a few likely reasons: First, the Colt patents on the Navy model were expiring, or already had. Second, during the war, the U.S. government was desperate for arms and had little concern over patent issues if the product worked.

In total, approximately 6,000 Metropolitan Navy revolvers were produced before the company folded in 1866, after peace reduced demand and Colt reasserted dominance in the marketplace. Today, Metropolitan revolvers are valued for their close link to Colt history and as symbols of Civil War-era industrial opportunism.
