GR-0525-6583, Untouched Confederate Enfield Pattern 3 Rifle Musket. SHG3 marked on the comb of the stock. JC Cartouche on the left side of the stock. 1862 Tower marked on the lock. The gun is in much better condition than you find most confederate imported muskets. It is all original, the wood has never been sanded or clean and neither has the metal. The wood has crisp edges and all the marks in the wood are crisp and legible. The Barrel bands are all seated and even screwed in correctly. The brass mounts all have a dark untouched patina. The metal markings are clear and the metal has never been cleaned or sanded. Oftentimes people cannot help themselves when they see an old gun with an untouched brown patina like this gun and they clean the metal. The gun was simply stored somewhere where residue built up on the metal. I love finding untouched guns and it is so difficult to find untouched and not messed with confederate guns. The barrel is marked 25-25. The JC cartouche on the left side of the stock is a James Chattaway mark. He was a federal inspector from 1862-1863. The stock maker mark on the bottom of the stock is “Taylor & Newman’. The stock is original with overall moderate bumps, and uses marks and some gouges. The was nearly full of dust and crap when first got the gun, more evidence to prove this gun had never been messed with or cleaned in 100 + years. I did want to make sure there was rifling in the bore so we scrubbed the bore. Rifling is strong in the bore but there is still residue in the bore. The mechanics are crisp and functional.
The Sinclair Hamilton marking has been described in the book, “The English Connection”, written by Tim Prince and an in depth description is below from information pulled from that book. This gun is in much better than average condition for a Confederate issued gun. Not a minty gun but a gun that needs no excuses. It was used, taken care of and then sat in a closet, attic or safe for over 100 years. It will be difficult to replicate this gun in the future. A very handsome gun and a wonderful piece of history.
