GR-0725-6429, Ballard US Contract Civil War Carbine.22 inch barrel. 44 Rimfire Cal. BLOWOUT
Current bid: $650.00
GR-0725-6429, Ballard US Contract Civil War Carbine.22 inch barrel. 44 Rimfire Cal. The gun was cleaned long ago and some metal markings were cleaned off. The barrel address is still present and legible. Marking on the frame and stock are gone. There is dark brown patina on the barrel and frame, the barrel is marked Ball and Williams on the top of the barrel. It is also marked Merwin and Bray on the side of the barrel. Serial number #78xx matching on visible numbers. The ejector handle is missing. The barrel band is replaced. The gun shows moderate bumps, dings and repairs with an old stock repair. There is an outline of a cartouche on the left side of the stock. The repair was done right on top of it. The stock was cleaned and refinished with a lacquer or heavy oil at some point, probably when it was repaired. These are an uncommon gun and a hard one to find in any condition. Mechanics are functional, with exception to the ejector finger piece. The bore is mostly bright, shiny and crisply rifled. There are a couple of patches or residue near the muzzle of the bore that looks like it will clean out. There are scattered fine spots in the bore too. Very good bore as is. Good overall.

The Ballard carbine, developed by Charles H. Ballard and patented in 1861, was a single-shot, breechloading rifle that gained attention for its simplicity, accuracy, and ease of operation. Early production was handled by Ball & Williams of Worcester, Massachusetts, who manufactured the majority of Ballard carbines used during the Civil War. The carbine was chambered in .44 rimfire and featured a falling-block action operated by a lever beneath the trigger guard.
Ball & Williams produced several thousand for government contracts between 1862 and 1865, supplying them primarily to the Union cavalry. These carbines were part of a broader shift away from muzzleloaders to breechloading firearms, which allowed faster reloading on horseback and in close combat situations. The Ballard’s straightforward design made it well-suited for mounted troops who needed a light, dependable firearm.
Several Union units were issued Ballard carbines, including elements of the 5th, 9th, and 11th Ohio Cavalry, as well as units from Kentucky and Michigan. The carbines saw service primarily in the Western Theater, where their ruggedness and fast loading made them a practical weapon for skirmishes, scouting, and hit-and-run tactics often employed in that part of the war.
Although the Ballard never saw the same scale of issue as the Sharps or Spencer carbines, it was well-regarded by troops who used it. After the war, the Ballard design lived on in civilian target and sporting rifles produced by other makers well into the late 19th century—proof of the design’s lasting value.
