GR-0725-6605, New Jersey Militia Contract Remington New Model Army. 8 inch barrel. 6 shot. .44 percussion cal. Handsome gun that has about 70% barrel blue and traces of blue on the frame in protected places. The metal edges are crisp and the screw heads are not buggered up at all. Fine condition 2 piece original grips. There are a few bumps and dings on the grips but no evidence of cleaning or abuse of any kind. There are a few light stamps in the grips, some type of decoration, on the right grip and bottom of both. The grips are not cartouched, which is correct for a militia issued gun. Serial number 80,XXX matches on the barrel, frame, penciled on the inside of each grip and the trigger-guard. There is no number on the cylinder, which is often the case. The “N.J” on the left flat of the barrel is the correct stamp and is clear and legible. The barrel address is crisp and clear. The bore shows crisp rifling but there is residue the length of the bore with patches of bright metal where there is no residue. The bore needs to be soaked and scrubbed. It looks like it should clean to a very nice bore if the residue will clean out. Crisp and functional mechanics with functional half cock and full cock positions. The cylinder locks up really tight in the full cock position. Very good overall.

The Remington New Model Army was one of the most trusted and battle-proven revolvers of the Civil War. Introduced in 1863, it was the final and best version of Remington’s percussion revolver line, building on earlier models like the 1858. It featured a solid-frame design—stronger and more durable than the open-top Colts—and was chambered in .44 caliber, making it a serious combat weapon.

Union soldiers treasured the Remington for its strength, reliability, and ease of use. The solid frame not only made it more rugged, but it also held its sights better and could withstand harsher treatment in the field. One of its biggest advantages was the removable cylinder, which allowed a soldier to swap in a loaded spare rather than fumbling with powder and ball under fire. In a tight spot, that feature could save a life.

The federal government issued around 130,000 New Model Army revolvers during the war, and they saw heavy use in the hands of Union cavalry and officers. But beyond federal contracts, states also stepped up to equip their own units—and New Jersey was a major buyer. The state purchased large numbers of Remingtons to arm its militias and volunteer regiments. These state-marked guns are especially desirable today, as they reflect that unique blend of state and federal effort to equip troops during a chaotic and fast-moving conflict.

Soldiers often preferred the Remington to the Colt, and many went out of their way to hang onto them after the war. It wasn’t just a sidearm—it was a trusted tool, proven in battle and built to last.
