GR-0725-6619, Early Colt Model 1851 Navy. Made in 1852. 6 shot. .36 percussion. 7 ½ inch barrel. The gun has the correct small guard and barrel address. Serial number 17,xxx matches on the barrel, lever, frame, trigger-guard, back-strap and cylinder. The number on the wedge does not match. The brass shows 30% tarnished silver in protected places.  The barrel has some original blue finish that looks like it has been touched up with a cold blue or something similar a long time ago. It is hard to tell how much of the blue is original, the touch up blue looks like it was applied a long time ago and shows wear and age. The frame shows a mottled gray color from faded case color and flashes or bright case color in protected places.  The cylinder shows about 30% scene, it was lightly cleaned at some point and had what looks like the same old blue touch up color as the barrel. The grips are very slightly undersized, they were probably very lightly cleaned at the same time the color was touched up on the gun. They are the original grips to the gun I am sure, I see no original varnish on the grips but some light oil has been applied. The bore is bright, shiny, crisply rifled with a few fine spots. Fine condition bore, and much better than the average bore. The mechanics are crisp and tight with 3 clicks.

The Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver was one of the most iconic sidearms of the 19th century. It was developed by Samuel Colt as a mid-sized, .36 caliber revolver that filled the gap between the small pocket models like the 1849 and the big, heavy Dragoon pistols. Introduced in—you guessed it—1851, the Navy model was built on a lighter frame but still packed enough power to be taken seriously, especially for belt carry.

Colt designed it to appeal to both military and civilian users. The gun’s size, balance, and smooth handling made it a standout. It featured an octagonal barrel and a distinctive engraved naval battle scene on the cylinder—hence the name “Navy.”

During the California Gold Rush, the 1851 Navy became incredibly popular. Thousands of prospectors, lawmen, and gamblers carried one. It was compact enough for daily wear but had enough firepower to keep someone safe in a rough mining town. It was also relatively affordable and widely available thanks to Colt’s improved manufacturing methods.

The U.S. military took notice early. The Navy revolver saw limited use during conflicts in the 1850s, including with U.S. naval forces and mounted troops, but its real wartime service came during the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate soldiers carried them—some issued, some privately purchased. It was prized for its reliability, accuracy, and simple operation. Many officers carried them as personal sidearms, and even after newer models came out, the 1851 remained in active use well into the war.

All told, the Colt Navy wasn’t just a popular revolver—it was a trusted companion during one of the most pivotal chapters in American history.
