GR-0825-6621, Early 4 Screw Colt Model 1860 Army Refurbished for 9th or 10th Cavalry. These guns were refurbished after the Civil War, from gun parts of Civil War US issued guns. Quality parts from returned guns were put together,  refurbished and stamped with the US on the trigger guard. They were then given to 9th & 10 Cav units or Buffalo Soldiers. These units were the face of the US military on the edge of the frontier. This is the best one of these I have ever owned. Most of them are beaten to hell! In my opinion these guns, in this configuration are true frontier, Indian fighting guns. Great gun worthy to be in a great Indian war gun collection.

The gun is mismatched which is correct for an Arsenal Rebuild. 4 screw frame with about 80% bright arsenal redone case color. 75% blue on the barrel. About 60% blue on the cylinder and back-strap. Crisp tight mechanics. Bright excellent bore. There is about 80% cylinder scene, which is uncommon, most of these revolvers when refurbished, the cylinder scene was cleaned almost entirely off. I have had a few nice examples over the years and this gun retains more finish that I have ever seen on a refurbished gun. I believe that is because they were used so heavily. Very interesting gun with both Civil War History as well as Indian Wars history. If only guns could talk!

Brief History of the Refurnished / Rebuilt Colt 1860 Army

At the close of the Civil War, the Army had issued nearly 130,000 Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers, yet surprisingly few remained for post-war service. Heavy field use, losses, and men purchasing their sidearms when mustering out left only 40,000–45,000 serviceable examples. By 1867, fewer than 2,000 were ready for issue, forcing the Ordnance Department to launch a large “clean and repair” program.

These arsenal rebuilds often show mismatched parts, weak markings from refinishing, and slightly shortened barrels where muzzles were trued. About 1,000–1,500 were stamped “US” on the triggerguard—likely done at the St. Louis Arsenal between 1867–1869. Many of these Colts went west with the newly formed 9th and 10th Cavalry, the famed “Buffalo Soldiers.” A handful survive marked “F 10 CAV,” proving issue to F Troop of the 10th Cavalry.

Though arsenal reworked, these revolvers carried a second life on the frontier until replaced by the Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson Schofield. Today, a “US”-marked, cleaned and repaired Colt 1860 stands as a scarce and desirable reminder of the Civil War’s aftermath and the early Indian Wars.
