GR-1023-4953, Belgium Brevet of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket. 6 shot .28 cal with 95% vivid etched cylinder scene. The grips show about 70% original varnish. The barrel and cylinder show 60% medium blue. The frame, lever and hammer show mottled gray case color. The serial number is matching, #18xxx on three visible numbers. The barrel is marked, COLT PATENT, P-LAVAULT A RIO DE JANERIO. In general these guns were made under contract with Colt to use their patent for guns made for the Crimean War in Europe during the 1850’s, this gun is very well made. Fine overall. The barrel is 4 3/4 inches long. Rio de Janeiro could mean the gun ended up being sold in Brazil. Very interesting and very cute gun. I cannot think of another .28 percussion 6 shot revolver. I think all the Roots were 5 shot. Crisp mechanics. The bore is bright with strong rifling and scattered light spots and residue the length of the bore. It needs a good cleaning. Interesting part of Colt history that is not documented very well. I do not think I have ever seen this Brevete Model. Not even Brevete marked. Only Colt Patent marked.
