GR-1025-6677, Rare Merril Rifle. .54 Percussion. 33 inch barrel. Serial number 86xx matches on the lock and load lever. The gun is completely correct as configured, with also a bayonet lug, brass furniture and patchbox. This is an early production gun, there was a later batch of rifles made above serial number 14,000. The barrel retains about 85% original brown finish. The lock has about 50% original bright case color. The wood is in fine condition, showing honest use marks but no evidence of abuse and an excellent crisp and clear cartouche on the left side of the stock. There is bright case color all over the inside of the load lever apparatus. There are fine pinpricks on the tops of the load lever and a little on the back end of the barrel from black powder splash. This makes the stamp on the top of the load lever hard to read but is simply evidence of having been used. The mechanics are crisp and tight. The bore is bright, shiny, crisply rifled with some fine scattered pinpricks near the muzzle of the bore but still a very good bore. 770 Merril rifles were purchased by the US government during the Civil War and only about 800 were made. This is a very difficult gun to find, I have only seen a few over the years and this is really a nice example. Oftentimes the stocks are broken on these guns, they were prone to that. This is a Civil War Long Arm that escapes many collectors because of how hard it is to find. Not only are you getting a hard to find gun but it really is a nice, fine untouched condition and certainly carried during the Civil War.

The Merrill rifle was a product of wartime necessity and American ingenuity. Designed by Baltimore gunsmith James H. Merrill in the late 1850s, it used his patented breechloading system—a simple, plunger-style lever that locked tight and could be quickly opened to load a paper cartridge. When the Civil War began, Merrill adapted his carbine design into a full-length rifle intended for infantry use. Built at a time when both sides were desperate to modernize, the Merrill rifle represented a bridge between old muzzleloaders and the repeating arms soon to follow.

It was a practical, no-nonsense gun—strong, easy to maintain, and faster to load than the standard musket. Soldiers could fire from behind cover or reload while lying down, giving them an advantage that wasn’t possible with muzzleloaders. While only a small number were ever produced—roughly 770 rifles total—they were issued to select Union infantry and sharpshooter units that valued accuracy and reliability over sheer volume of fire. Merrill rifles saw service in the eastern campaigns and were prized for their sturdy construction and consistent performance in the field.

What makes the Merrill rifle stand out today is its scarcity. Most were used hard and saw rough service during the war, and very few survived in high condition. Finding one with crisp markings, an excellent bore, and original finish is exceptionally uncommon. For collectors, a Merrill rifle in top shape represents not just a rare Civil War firearm, but a tangible piece of the short-lived era when American arms were evolving from black powder muzzleloaders into the modern age.
