GR-1025-6714, Burnside 5th Model Saddle Ring Carbine. Serial number 34xx matches on the frame and block. .54 percussion Breech loading carbine. The frame, barrel and lever are smooth grey and show light cleaning from a long time ago, patina has begun to return. The stocks also show very light cleaning with a minor sliver chip on the left side, back end of the forearm. The metal parts have sub-inspector marks. I would expect to see a cartouche on the stock but I do not see any cartouche. It was most likely cleaned off the wood when the gun was cleaned a while ago. The metal markings are clear and legible with exception to the Cast Steel mark between the rear site and barrel band. This is not uncommon though, for whatever reason this mark on Burnside Carbines is often weak. The serial number on the gun is right in the middle of a bunch of Burnside Carbines in the same serial number range that were issued to the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. It was likely issued to 2nd Illinois Cav. The mechanics are crisp and functional. The bore is bright, shiny and crisply rifled with a few tiny spots. Fine condition bore. Very good overall.

The Burnside carbine was one of the most recognizable cavalry arms of the Civil War — a clever design that came about thanks to both innovation and politics. It was invented by Ambrose E. Burnside, a former Army officer who later became a Union general. Burnside patented the design in the 1850s and started the Burnside Rifle Company in Rhode Island to produce it. His idea was a strong, simple breechloader that used a unique, cone-shaped brass cartridge that sealed the chamber tightly when fired — solving the common problem of gas leakage found in many early breechloaders.

When the war began, Burnside’s political connections and reputation helped secure U.S. government contracts for his carbine. Some officers criticized the arrangement, claiming favoritism since Burnside was an active general, but the gun’s practical value quickly proved itself. It was accurate, dependable, and well-suited for cavalry use — a weapon you could reload quickly on horseback without spilling powder or struggling with paper cartridges.

The Burnside went through five main models, all similar in design but with improvements in the breech and lock mechanism. The first four models were made and issued early in the war and saw heavy field use in both the eastern and western theaters. By the time the 5th Model appeared late in the war, the Ordnance Department had already standardized on repeaters like the Spencer, but many of the later Burnsides were still completed and issued before the war’s end.

In the hands of Union cavalrymen, the Burnside was a solid performer. It was carried by regiments such as the 1st Rhode Island, 5th and 6th Michigan, and 7th Indiana Cavalry, and it saw service from Antietam to Appomattox. The carbine was known for accuracy, good balance, and reliable operation, and it remained one of the most widely used single-shot breechloaders of the war. For collectors today, the Burnside represents a perfect mix of innovation, wartime production, and personal history — a firearm tied directly to one of the Union’s most recognizable generals.
