GR-1025-6715, Id’d Sharps New Model Carbine. Id’d to 62 CO E 2nd Kansas Volunteer Infantry, a unit of Black Soldiers (Unit history is below). The gun is a military conversion from original percussion to now 50-70 cal. So it is a gun that had a long life, saw service during the Civil War and then most likely went out West for the Indian wars. It is now in standard conversion configuration done for the Indian Wars. The bore is a conversion barrel with crisply rifled 3 grove rifling. The bore is bright, shiny and crisply rifled. Fine condition bore. The stock has been lightly cleaned at some point. I see no cartouches and the saddle ring bar has been removed.  The frame, butt plate, lever and barrel band show an old reblue. The barrel has no markings and has a smooth brown patina with what looks to me traces of original blue in protected places. An extra dovetail has been cut into the barrel and filled with the base of a rear sight. Serial number 77,392, places this gun having been made in 1862. The metal markings on the frame are mostly legible but slightly weak. The action is crisp and functional. Very good overall. It is a gun with at least 2 stories, Civil War and Indian War. It would be fascinating to know where it ended up on the frontier too but at least we have some of the Civil War history. Guns with documented history going back to Black Soldiers are very difficult to find.
