JR-0425-9964, Swiss Vetterli M-1871, military rifle using 10.4×38mm Swiss Rimfire. #212xxx matching on the visible numbers. With rack numbers on the spine of the butt stock. The gun retains 90% deep barrel and frame blue. The action is crisp and the bore is minty bright. Light bumps and dings, mostly to the stock. It has a M-81 on the side of the frame, I take that as a later modification from original conformation. From 1887 until 1896, the Italian Army converted M1870s into a four-shot repeating rifle, based on the system designed by Italian artillery captain, G. Vitali. This conversion added a box magazine fed from a steel and wood charger holding four cartridges The clip is pressed into the magazine, until the last round catches under the Cartridge retainer, and then the clip is withdrawn using the “pull string” in the top wooden frame of the clip. Clips of cartridges were supplied in a soldered sheet steel box, holding six clips. When they became obsolete they were still in arsenals and later used in WWI until replaced by more modern guns of the time. Thousands were sold as surplus on the Civilian market. During the Coal Wars, a series of U.S. labor conflicts, Vetterli rifles were sought after not only as bear rifles but as self defense rifles called the “poor man’s bear gun”. During the Battle of Blair Mountain, Vetterli rifles were often used by coal miners as combat rifles. Excellent overall. Antique.
