GR79-0423-4670, Smith and Wesson #3 Commercial Model SA Revolver in 44 Russian. Serial #49xxx and dated 1874 on frame. Assembly number 638 matches on cylinder, barrel and latch. 80% original nickel with wear and sunlight bleaching from years of use. The nickel has worn on the right side of the frame, probably from exposure in a holster. Overall the pistol shows scattered surface staining and rub marks. I love nickel guns that look like this gun, there is absolutely no way to fake the dulled nickel finish. The gun would have to never have been cleaned or messed with to look the way it does, with the dull nickel and dark brown staining where finish is gone. A lot of guys would polish the gun so the nickel would look bright but I think that ruins the history of the gun. The gun has excellent grips that fit perfectly. There is bright case color on the hammer and nitre blue on the latch. The matching serial number is stamped on the back of the right grip. This is correct for early smiths, only 1 grip was stamped. The mechanics are unusually crisp and tight. I feel that more often than not, the mechanics on these commercial models are a little clunky. The mechanics on this gun are very nice, as well as the ejector. Both feel very crisp. Excellent bore. Most screw heads are very nice and not buggered at all. A couple of them are slightly buggered. Metal edges are all crisp. Barrel address is crisp and clear. Handsome gun in untouched condition, and that is exactly how I like finding them. Much better than average. Excellent overall.
